Happy Friday!
At Amazing Workplace, May is the month of Do the Impossible.
There are two commonly used definitions for “impossible”:
- “Something that cannot be done.”
- “Something that feels or seems like it cannot be done.”
When something sounds impossible, ask yourself, “Is it that it’s impossible, or that it just hasn’t been done yet?” Anything is possible if you find the way to do it.
A willingness to find the way to do the impossible is the first step. From there:
Get creative. Getting creative is the best way to do the impossible. Talk through your goal with people who are familiar with the work you are doing and collect every suggestion you can. Forget the usual way of doing things and disregard arbitrary “rules.”
When overcoming obstacles that don’t have a known solution, be willing to try any idea that has potential. Don’t stop at one idea or one test. Try as many as possible and keep track of what works and what doesn’t.
Get help. Often, we see things as impossible because they require so much work or because we don’t have the skill to overcome all of the challenges. But with the work of a team we can do huge amounts of work, and with the guidance of the right people we can solve the most complex problems.
Seek help, build teams, and invite collaboration to overcome impossibility.
Be persistent. Work hard and don’t give up. Setbacks and failures happen, but these are the learning opportunities that can guide you in the right direction. Be willing to commit over a long period of time to reap the rewards of Doing the Impossible.

How curiosity changed the way we communicate.
In In the late 1700’s, France used “semaphore telegraphy” to transmit messages over long distances. This system used large towers that displayed messages. Operators used a telescope to see the message, then updated their own display to match the message for operators further down the line. At this time, it was the fastest way to send messages.
In the early 1800’s the United States government offered $30,000 dollars to anyone who could build a semaphore telegraphy system that spanned 1,000 miles. Nobody took the challenge seriously as it was deemed impossible.
In 1837, Samuel Morse invented a telegraph machine that sent messages across wires using electricity. Morse was a painter by trade, but on a trip home from Europe, he found himself in conversation with another passenger about electromagnetism. He knew nothing of electricity but became intrigued by the idea of sending messages across wires. While developing and building his machine, he encountered failures and setbacks but sought help from colleagues who had expertise working with electricity.
In 1844, years of hard work paid off, and Morse sent his first successful telegraph message, proving that long range communication was possible.
Just for fun, here’s how you would write the word “possible” in morse code:
